Hasbara 2.0: Volkskrant hielp Israël met oorlogsmisdaden

Column in The Guardian van Richard Silverstein tijdens het bloedbad in Gaza:

The hasbara brigade strikes again! You always hear about Israeli attempts at media manipulation. Everyone knows it's going on but usually the process happens through cyber insurgents like those involved with Giyus (and its media monitoring software, Megaphone). Now, we know that the Israeli foreign ministry itself is orchestrating propaganda efforts designed to flood news websites with pro-Israel arguments and information.

Een voorbeeld van een uitnodiging om pro-Israël "media-vrijwilliger" te worden:

Dear friends,
We hold the military supremacy, yet fail the battle over the international media. We need to buy time for the IDF to succeed, and the least we can do is spare some (additional) minutes on the net. The ministry of foreign affairs is putting great efforts in balancing the media, but we all know it's a battle of numbers. The more we post, blog, talkback, vote – the more likely we gain positive sentiment.
I was asked by the ministry of foreign affairs to arrange a network of volunteers, who are willing to contribute to this effort. If you're up to it you will receive a daily messages & media package as well as targets.

Dat deed de ontvanger, en kreeg vervolgens dit (pdf) uitgebreide communiqué van het Israëlische ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken toegestuurd, met daarin punten die de propagandeur moest gebruiken in zijn werk. Niet verassend zijn de meeste punten terug te vinden in de uitlatingen van Maxime Verhagen en alle "vrienden van Israël" die de Israëlische terreur steunen. Maar vooral ook in onze pro-Israël media, ten tijde van de massamoord op de opgesloten Gazaanse burgers. En natuurlijk de propagandeurs die dat al jarenlang doen. Bijvoorbeeld deze email die Ratna Pelle rondstuurde aan vrienden en bekenden, zoals Kees Broer-Eikmeijer (aka Keesjemaduraatje) die hem op zijn weblog zette, en hem even later weer verwijderde. Zou hij zich schamen om toe te geven dat hij deel uitmaakt van dat netwerk? Al zijn lezers weten het wel, dus vanwaar die zelfcensuur van deze ridder van de vrijheid van meningsuiting?

De Volkskrant hielp mee het bloedbad in Gaza te legitimeren

"Also targeted were other media sites in Dutch, Spanish, German and French considered critical of the invasion." ... "Tony Karon points out that pro-Israel journalist-historian Michael Oren has published several stories since the Gaza incursion began in US media outlets like the New Republic and Los Angeles Times. He is also on active duty with the IDF in Gaza serving as a public affairs officer liasing with foreign media. You will find nothing noting this in the Los Angeles Times op ed. In effect, the media is allowing advocates like Oren to pass themselves off as disinterested experts when they are anything but."

En ja hoor, wat lezen we tijdens de aanval op Gaza in de Volkskrant, naar eigen zeggen een "kwaliteitskrant" die zonodig met belastinggeld gesubsidieerd moet gaan worden: Israël moet Hamas definitief verslaan - door Michael B. Oren en Yossi Klein Halevi. Opgesierd met een foto van het Israëlische ministerie van Defensie. En let op: "Michael B. Oren is docent aan het Shalem Centrum in Jeruzalem en hoogleraar aan  Georgetown University. Yossi Klein Halevi is docent aan het  Shalem Centrum." Precies zoals Silverstein het in de Guardian beschrijft. Ook Yossi Klein Halevi is niet alleen maar een onschuldig leraartje, maar een actieve ultrarechtse pro-Israël publicist actief in de VS, en net als "philo-Zionist" Michael B. Oren lid van de Israel Hasbara Committee. Het het Shalem Centrum is een likudnik denktank, dus geen opleidingsinstituut, zoals de Volkskrant suggereert.

Vijf dagen na de publicatie in de Volkskrant en één dag voordat de kinderen van Magdi al-Samuli (zie foto) door het Israëlische leger werden gedood, ging Michael B. Oren Back to the Front om het IDF bij te staan zodat ze nog meer Palestijnen ongestrafd zouden kunnen doden - én met een beetje hulp van de Volkskrant:

Irrespective of Israel's goals, my unit's job will be to afford the IDF the requisite time to achieve them by fostering a sympathetic press and, through it, an amenable diplomatic environment. The IDF has learned many lessons from its bitter Lebanon experience and the need for effective PR is one of them. I believe we can make a difference.
Nevertheless, as a soldier, I will have to keep the most compelling argument to myself. The truth is that the Gaza conflict, like the Lebanon war before it, is merely a tactical stage in a fateful strategic struggle.

Vlak na Gaza werd Oren benoemd tot ambassadeur van israël in de VS. Noem het een bedankje voor bewezen diensten.
