Let me add that I am encouraged by your recommendation that a country that feels compelled to resort to the use of force should be prepared to publicly justify its reasoning, thus allowing others to check the legal basis and to weigh the necessity and proportionality of its actions.

We have heard a wide range of views – some controversial - on how applicable law should be determined when countering terrorism. I have always argued that there can be no circumstances which excuse human rights violations, even in the fight against terrorism, although there may be special laws dealing with terrorist acts.


Verhagen over de extremist Avigdor Lieberman: "Minister Lieberman blijkt een bedachtzaam spreker" (op Twitter, 24 juni 2009).
Lieberman had eerder voorgesteld om o.a. alle Arabische knessetleden te laten executeren, om een atoombom op Gaza te gooien, en om alle Palestijnse gevangenen in de Dode Zee te verdrinken. Hijzelf zou in dat geval het transport verzorgen.

Op 29 april wordt Maxime Verhagen door de joodse lobby bedankt voor zijn werk voor Israël. Hij krijgt in Washington een prijs uitgereikt door het American Jewish Committee (AJC), de buitenlandvleugel van van de zogeheten Israël-lobby. Het kent 35 vertegenwoordigers die zich o.a. bezighouden met het oprichten van pressiegroepen (zoals bijv. UN Watch), het verspreiden van pro-Israël propaganda en het demoniseren van critici ("antisemieten"), politieke lobby, het ronselen van stemmen in het Amerikaanse Congres, en het 'opleiden' van journalisten, studentenleiders, opiniemakers, etc. met cursussen in het Israël. De organisatie is nauw verbonden met AIPAC, en heeft afdelingen in o.a. Brussel, Berlijn, Parijs, Rome en Geneve.
